De film vertelt het verhaal van Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), een zestienjarig Afro-Amerikaans meisje geboren in Harlem, in een keiharde omgeving. Het leven lacht haar niet bepaald toe: ze is voor de tweede keer in verwachting van haar vader. Thuis loopt ze op eieren om te vermijden dat haar moeder (Mo'Nique), een intens boze vrouw, haar mishandelt. Haar leven verandert als ze de kans krijgt over te stappen naar een alternatieve school.
