Sinopsis:
Daigo Kobayashi, antiguo violoncelista de una orquesta que se acaba de disolver, acaba vagando por las calles sin trabajo y sin demasiada esperanza. Por ello decide regresar a su ciudad natal en compañía de su esposa. Allí consigue un empleo como enterrador: limpia los cuerpos, los coloca en su ataud y los envía al otro mundo de la mejor forma posible. Aunque su esposa y sus vecinos contemplan con desagrado este puesto, Daigo descubrirá en este ritual de muerte la chispa vital que le faltaba a su propia vida.

Synopsis:
Daigo Kobayashi, a former cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved, just wandering the streets without work and without much hope. So he decided to return to his hometown with his wife. They get a job as a gravedigger: clean the bodies, placed in his coffin and sent to the other world in the best possible way. Although his wife and neighbors viewed with displeasure this job, Daigo discover in this ritual of death the vital spark that was missing from his life.
