In een West-Afrikaans land verbouwt een blank gezin al drie generaties koffie. Als het door een
burgeroorlog onrustig wordt weigert Maria, de moeder van het gezin, de plantage alleen te laten en
de oogst op te geven. Voor haar is dat een teken van zwakte. Maria\'s ex-man en vader van haar
kinderen, André, is echter van plan terug te gaan naar Frankrijk samen met zijn nieuwe vrouw, daar
heeft hij alles voor over, ook Maria verraden.

Denis revisits Africa, this time exploring a place rife with civil and racial conflict. A white French family
outlawed in its home and attempting to save its coffee plantation connects with a black hero also
embroiled in the tumult. All try to survive as their world rapidly crumbles around them.
