sunroof!’s Cloudz defies categorization, not because it’s so wholly unlike anything else that it stands on its own, but because it subtly tweaks and nudges its way out of the categories that it should, by all rights, inhabit.

Cloudz is clearly not just drone -- or just noise, just psych, just electronic, just anything -- but the sum of all of Matthew Bower’s experiments and interests. And yet, the album completely holds together as a cohesive album, never seeming scattered or too eclectic; all of the tracks have a certain inscrutable feel to them, impossible to describe but very easy to identify. There’s a heaviness, even a liveliness, to this music, that makes even Sunroof!’s calmest moments almost unbearably intense and raw. The music gleams and glimmers as beautifully as a new car’s curves in the sun, but it also revs and growls as hard as the ugly engine under the hood.
