Summertime In Birkenhead - Jimmy [Summertime] Stevens torrent

Jimmy was born on 5 August 1942 at 27 Moss Street, Garston, Liverpool 19 and lived his early life in Garston and Speke with his father Tom, a bookmaker, his mother Elizabeth and his brother Tommy and sister Mary.


Jimmy's dad had acquired an upright piano from a pub and aided Jimmy in becoming a good all-round musician. With all his friends joining local groups and with his love of Buddy Holly, Ray Charles and Fats Domino, Jimmy was spotted singing in the Shipperies pub by the manager of the Beathovens, and was asked to join the band, replacing their singer Gerry Bach. They began playing at venues such at the Cavern and Blue Angel, performing mainly Buddy Holly numbers.




Jimmy comments: "I got into writing songs by accident. I was learning 'Better Move On' and my brother said it didn't sound anything like it so I put my own words to it and called it 'Baby That's It.' .Then I met a lad called Dave Wilcox in the U.A.B he said his group had won a record deal in a competition, so I said I've just written a song, so his group the Young Ones did it on Decca, produced by Shel Talmy and Mike Stone."
