Sinopse:
Em São Francisco Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas), um banqueiro milionário no seu 48º aniversário (a idade do pai quando se suicidou), ganha de presente do seu irmão Conrad (Sean Penn) um cartão que lhe dá acesso a um divertimento incomum, organizado pela empresa Serviços de Recreação do Consumidor. Deste momento em diante Nicholas se vê envolvido em um perigoso \"jogo\", que parece ter como objetivo matá-lo. Ele já não sabe em quem confiar, pois qualquer pessoa pode ser um assassino em potencial. Nicholas resolve então ir à polícia denunciar o ocorrido, mas quando chega na sede da empresa encontra apenas um andar vazio, sendo que a administradora do prédio nega que esta firma tenha tido no passado um escritório ali. Ele então toma consciência que tem de lutar sozinho para se manter vivo e evitar que as pessoas por trás disto concluam o plano de roubar todo o seu dinheiro.
