In existential crisis, the philosophy professor Abe Lucas (Joaquin Phoenix) arrives to teach in a small city in the United States. Soon one of his students, Jill (Emma Stone), approaches him because of the fascination he feels for his intellect, beyond the sadness that always carries with him. Simultaneously, he is Rita target (Parker Posey), a married teacher who tries to have an affair with him. Life starts to improve to Abe when, on a trip to the cafeteria with Jill hears talk of an unknown on the loss of custody of the child because of a decision of the judge Spangler (Tom Kemp). Abe soon begins to idealize the murder of Spangler and how, as a total stranger, would never be discovered.
