In un'isola del sud d'Italia, nel 1948, il poeta cileno in esilio Pablo Neruda, si rifugia con la giovane e appassionata consorte Matilde. Al disoccupato Mario, figlio di un pescatore con scarsa vocazione per il mare, non par vero di accettare l'incarico di postino ausiliario dal locale capoufficio, Giorgio, comunista militante. Deve solo consegnare la nutrita corrispondenza del poeta, di cui inizia a leggere il "Canto general", e col quale a poco a poco, chiedendogli delucidazioni sulla sua "ars poetica", instaura un rapporto di amicizia. Il poeta riceve per il suo compleanno un messaggio registrato dal Cile e fa incidere sul dittafono un saluto per i suoi amici a Mario che come cosa più bella dell'isola cita Beatrice Russo, la giovane barista di cui si è invaghito e che riesce a conquistare con le "metafore" apprese dal poeta, che ha addirittura accompagnato il giovane all'osteria, dedicandogli pubblicamente una poesia. Beatrice, affascinata, nonostante il divieto della zia di rivederlo, si concede a Mario e alle nozze riparatrici Neruda fa da testimone, nonostante le perplessità del curato. Frattanto l'esilio viene revocato ed il poeta può ritornare in patria. Passano cinque anni e Mario segue le vicende dell'illustre amico sui cinegiornali, e alla radio, ma l'unico segno è la lettera del segretario del poeta che gli chiede i libri e gli oggetti lasciati sull'isola, dove, grazie al deputato della Democrazia Cristiana Di Cosimo, sono finalmente iniziati i lavori dell'acquedotto. Mario, che aspetta un figlio, registra per l'amico lontano i rumori dell'isola, la voce del mare e del vento, ed il battito cardiaco del nascituro. Ma dopo la vittoria della Democrazia Cristiana, i lavori vengono interrotti, e Mario è sempre più impegnato nel partito comunista. Cinque anni dopo, Neruda e la moglie entrano di nuovo nell'osteria di Beatrice, e vi trovano Pablito, il figlio di Mario. Ma quest'ultimo non lo ha nemmeno visto nascere: è morto a Roma durante un comizio in cui doveva leggere di una poesia in onore di Neruda.

Five years later, Neruda and his wife came back to Beatrice's inn, and they find Pablito, Mario's son. But the latter did not even see him born: he died in Rome during a meeting where he had to read a poem in honor of Neruda.
