Trine is a puzzle-heavy platformer with a mild fantasy storyline that finds gamers frequently switching between three characters in order to traverse its side-scrolling levels. The game's puzzles are physics based, and each of the characters offers a specific skillset to help overcome obstacles and defeat enemies. Pontius is a dim-witted knight who uses his melee weapons and brute strength to bash through foes and lift heavy objects, while Zoya the thief employs her skills as an archer and her grappling hook to attack enemies and solve environmental puzzles, and Amadeus the wizard can move objects telepathically or conjure boxes and planks to crush foes, deflect moving hazards, and create bridges. Trine also supports co-op play for up to three people, a feature designed to add extra depth to the game's physics-based puzzles
