De film vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van regisseur en vliegtuigbouwer Howard Hughes. Vanuit een fascinatie voor
vliegtuigen probeert Hughes vanaf de jaren '30 voortdurend de grenzen op dit gebied te verleggen. Ondertussen heeft hij twee
liefdesaffaires met Hollywood legendes Katharine Hepburn en Ava Gardner en ondervindt hij steeds meer problemen van zijn
smetvrees. Vlak na de oorlog raakt Hughes in een strijd verwikkeld om de macht in het trans-Atlantische luchtruim.

The script begins as a young Hughes directs one of Scorsese's favorite films, Hell's Angels. Hughes was so obsessed with
perfection in the aerial sequences that he waits forever for perfect conditions, right down to cloud formations. The Aviator
ends in 1946, when Hughes was still a dashing young man and romancing actresses like Ava Gardner and Katharine Hepburn.
