Synopsis:

Director Roger Michell stages this famous scene wonderfully. Visually memorable and shocking, using a combination of stunt work and computer-generated tricks, it sets the tone for what is one of the best British films in recent memory. On the back of The Mother, Michell's last collaboration with star Daniel Craig and producer Kevin Loader, it marks out this unofficial team as the most productive British outfit since the heady days of Figment Films joining forces with Ewan McGregor to make Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.

Dealing with issues of grief, obsession and death, the film begins in earnest as Joe, a university lecturer, becomes increasingly distraught and guilt-ridden that he let go of the rope. While seeking out the deceased man's wife (McCrory) to try and understand more about the victim, worse is to come, as Jed (Ifans), a scruffy Bible-basher who was also one of the would-be rescuers, muscles his way into Joe's life. He becomes increasingly visible, sending Joe towards a nervous breakdown as he becomes alienated from sculptress Claire and their friends (Nighy, Lynch).

Faithfully adapted by Joe Penhall (the playwright who penned Simon Cellan-Jones' excellent Some Voices, also with Craig) from McEwan's novel, Enduring Love truly exploits its potential. After his American sojourn for Changing Lanes, the former BBC director Michell is emerging as one of this country's most adept cinematic artists. Much like in The Mother, his framing and attention to detail here is remarkable, conjuring a unique and ominous atmosphere that seeps through the narrative.

REVIEW AND VERDICT:
Taut, tense and provocative, Roger Michell's Enduring Love is that rare thing where all the elements - acting, script, direction, photography and design - come together to form an exceptional piece. If only all British films could be this good. ------------by Channel4.com
