Torrent Description
Not all the water in the rough rude sea
Can wash the balm off from an anointed king;

For every man that Bolingbroke hath press'd
To lift shrewd steel against our golden crown,
God for his Richard hath in heavenly pay
A glorious angel: then, if angels fight,
Weak men must fall, for heaven still guards the right.
The action of the play occurs more than a half millenium ago but it is still politics as usual - a dialectic of two rivals who manipulate appearances to establish supremacy. Both Richard and Bolingbroke want to achieve an effect, win applause and dominate the stage. Richard has been described as a ‘half attractive failure’, being both irresolute and ineffectual. Only when he abdicates does he show mettle.
This is the Argo production from 1972, with Richard Pasco and Timothy West as the two protagonists. As usual, this particular version should be distinguished from the Argo recording of the play released in 1958. All the supplementary Argo productions have now been uploaded apart from an alternative version of the sonnets.
Pasco and Gielgud are the two notable Richards of the post-war era and this particular recording is first-rate - please seed.
