Catamenia is one of those bands, given birth in the wake of Sentenced in the nineties. They hail from the same Finnish city, Oulu. They added some more death metal influences (in the beginning black elements as well) to their vigorous, yet melancholic songs. Cursed by many line-up changes they never managed to get out of an underground status, even if their music had something to offer for the listener. Guitarist/founder member Riku Hopeakoski is the only remaining member through all these years. He deserves a medallion for his perseverance. The band was already formed in 1995 and released nine albums and the DVD ‘Bringing The Cold To Poland’ since their debut album ‘Halls Of Frozen North’ (1998).

After so long they decided that time has come for a compilation. After more than fifteen years of hard labour to get things fixed it seems more than right, even though not all albums were of equal quality. Latest studio effort however ‘Cavalcade’ turned out better than the rather weak ‘VIII – The Time Unchained’. Now that there are upcoming tours in South America, Russia and Europe it seems that the band likes to write some more chapters in the ever expanding book of metal history.

This is not a common compilation, trying to jolly fans and reviewers along with hardly noticeable changes by re-mastering the whole bunch. No, they entered the Mastervox Studios again under the helm of producer Kari Vähäkuopus to give every track a current flavour. That makes a difference, only in production not in approach, and thus songs like ‘Blackmension’, ‘The Day When The Sun Faded Away’, ‘Morning Crimson’ and ‘Lost In Bitterness’ are truly upgraded when you compare them to the original versions. Technical skills have increased and the band learned a lot along the road as well. As obligate cover they have chosen the mainstream, poppy track ‘Born To Be My Baby’ from Bon Jovi this time. Well, most likely subject of discussion, but Catamenia makes it more metal anyways. Catamenia remains an underground band, but in the meantime they enjoy going on the road, they solve the problems and they produce meritorious music. Same goes for bands like Omnium Gatherum and Graveworm, to name a few. By the way, they have been loyal to Massacre Records for a long time (and vice versa). Or do they close a chapter with this compilation? Anyway, I can recommend checking out ‘The Rewritten Chapters’ for those who have nothing in their collection of these Finns and have a liking for well executed Nordic metal. You will have a peek in the past, while experiencing a glimpse of future endeavours.
