Alors que Dylan a joué huit soirs au Nippon Budokan Hall, seuls les concerts du 28 février et du 1er mars ont été enregistrés sur une bande analogique multipiste à 24 canaux ; sur les 58 pistes de The Complete Budokan 1978, 36 étaient inédites. « L’album terminé documente le son remarquable des légendaires concerts du Budokan qui sont à jamais gravés dans l’histoire, a déclaré Heckel Sugano, le chef de produit de CBS Sony pour Bob Dylan au Japon à l’époque des enregistrements, dans un communiqué. Nous avons essayé de reproduire fidèlement le son que le public japonais aurait entendu dans la salle de concert. » Un nouveau remix des enregistrements a été réalisé à partir des bandes multicanaux originales à 24 canaux. « Nous avons mixé le disque en gardant à l’esprit le mot clé “passion”. Le résultat est un mixage qui surpasse la version originale de 1978, offrant un son plus net et plus clair où chaque instrument et la voix de Bob Dylan sont distinctement audibles », a ajouté l’ingénieur en chef Tom Suzuki. The Complete Budokan 1978 sortira le 17 novembre sous la forme d’un coffret de 4 CD et, conformément à l’esprit original de l’album live, d’un coffret de 8 vinyles réservé au Japon. Bob Dylan at Budokan a d’abord été publié exclusivement au Japon en 1978, avant que la demande mondiale n’impose une sortie mondiale l’année suivante.
