Journey will release their first album in more than a decade this summer. Freedom arrives on July 8. "During the pandemic, there wasn’t much to do,” guitarist Neal Schon said in a press release. “I spent a lot of time in my little studio at home, learning how to play keyboards and looping. Some of those ideas ended up being songs. So it kind of came out of nowhere.”
In February, Schon shared an Instagram post containing the band's signature scarab logo, the Freedom title and the 15-song track listing with the caption, "Teaser … it’s coming and it’s loaded."

Freedom marks the band's first album since 2011's Eclipse. Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and singer Arnel Pineda are joined on the record by bassist Randy Jackson, who also played on Journey’s 1986 album Raised on Radio.

The new album also includes "The Way We Used to Be," which the band released in June 2021 with an animated music video.
Schon said that song "came out of one of the many loops I’d written while the long downtime continued with the pandemic we all had to deal with. … I laid down the keyboard loop with overdubbed rhythm and a little blues lead guitar and sent it to Jonathan. He sent it back very shortly after with demo vocals and lyrics, and I said to myself with a smile, 'We've still got it!'"

Freedom is also the name of Journey's current North American tour, which launched in February. Toto are providing support for the entire trek. Toto were originally scheduled to split opening duties with Billy Idol, but he had to bow out of the tour to receive sinus surgery.
