Publié en mars 1918*, cet ouvrage est un manuel pour la formation des pilotes destiné aux instructeurs et aux pilotes. Il représente la somme de toutes les connaissances dans l'art du pilotage de l'époque. Technique, petits dépannages et entretien, pilotage, navigation et même quelques rudiments médicaux. Tout ce qui était considéré comme nécessaire à un pilote de cette l'époque y est abordé et expliqué.
Ce manuel a été écrit par un officier du Royal Naval Air Service, le Flight-Commander W.S. Branker pas ou peu connu de notre côté de la Manche.
Pourtant ce fut un homme hors du commun pour l'aviation de nos voisins britanniques. Premier vol en 1910, il obtient le 18 juin 1913 le brevet n°525 délivré par la seule autorité britannique d'alors, le Royal Aero Club. Très actif durant l'entre deux guerre, il a beaucoup contribué à développer et structurer l'aviation civile en grande bretagne jusqu'à son décès le 5 octobre 1930 dans le crash du dirigeable R101, dans les environs de Beauvais. Pour rendre hommage à cet homme qui a tant fait pour le développement de l'aviation anglaise, la compagnie "British European Airways" (disparue aujourd'hui) a nommé un de ses Douglas DC-3 "Sir Sefton Brancker" (G-AKNB). British Airways a fait de même en 1996 avec un B777 (G-ZZZB) baptisé "Sir William Sefton Branker".

Published in March 1918 *, this book is a pilot training manual intended for instructors and pilots. It represents the sum of all the knowledge in the art of piloting of the time. Technical, small repairs and maintenance, piloting, navigation and even some medical basics. Everything that was considered necessary for a pilot at that time is discussed and explained.
This manual was written by an officer of the Royal Naval Air Service, the Flight-Commander W.S. Branker, not or little known on our side of the Channel. Yet he was an extraordinary man for the aviation of our British neighbors. First flight in 1910, on June 18, 1913, he obtained patent n° 525 issued by the only British authority at the time, the Royal Aero Club. Very active during the period between the two wars, he contributed a lot to developing and structuring civil aviation in Great Britain until his death on October 5, 1930 in the crash of the R101 airship, in the vicinity of Beauvais. To pay tribute to this man who did so much for the development of English aviation, the company "British European Airways" (now defunct) named one of its Douglas DC-3 "Sir Sefton Brancker" (G-AKNB ). British Airways did the same in 1996 with a B777 (G-ZZZB) dubbed "Sir William Sefton Branker".
