Le Jeu de Rôle des Terres du Milieu (JRTM, MERP en anglais) propose d'incarner un personnage dans le monde inventé par J.R.R. Tolkien, et décrit dans ses livres Le Seigneur des Anneaux et Bilbo le Hobbit, entre autres. C'est un monde médiéval-fantastique où se côtoient plusieurs races, et où le Mal, principalement représenté par Sauron, sorte de demi-dieu, essaye plus ou moins ouvertement d'imposer sa domination sur toutes les terres et les peuples.

Plusieurs époques de jeu sont décrites dans les suppléments, mais l'essentiel des descriptions et aventures permet de jouer au Troisième Âge. C'est une époque où les hommes dominent et où les elfes sont de moins en moins présents. Le Mal est au départ très discret, mais il est de plus en plus puissant et organisé avec le temps, pour finir par la guerre de l'Anneau à la fin du Troisième Âge.
