Economy and Society ( German : Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft ) is a test of Sociology of the German Max Weber published unfinished and posthumously in 1921 .
The book is taken from a manuscript with lacunary indications, composed after the disappearance of the sociologist by his wife Marianne and his publisher Johannes Winckelmann (de) . “In addition to the parts already written, it includes articles of various origins that have been added at the option of the German editions and their multiple translations” 1 .
Following a survey conducted among the members of the International Sociological Association in 1997 , the book is considered the most important published by discipline xx th century . Ranking it above The Sociological Imagination of C. Wright Mills and Social Theory and Social Structure of Robert K. Merton , who is third 2 .
French translation
The first volume was translated into French by Plon in 1971 by Julien Freund . Both volumes were published in 1995 (in pocket format, in the “Agora” collection) by a collective led by Jacques Chavy and Eric de Dampierre. The French review of sociology regrets “that the publisher has not benefited to correct the translation errors” Julien Freund 3 .
The last edition, at Pocket (collection “Evolution”), dates from 2003:
