Sebbene di base a Londra, il trio trip-hop Smoke City ha creato musica con un sound tipicamente brasiliano, influenzato dalla bossa nova – il che non sorprende, dato che la cantante Nina Miranda ha trascorso l'infanzia tra il Regno Unito e il Sud America. Miranda ha formato gli Smoke City con l'ex compagno di scuola Mark Brown, con il quale condivideva la passione non solo per la musica di Santana e Gilberto Gil, ma anche per il funk classico degli anni '70; completando la formazione con il chitarrista Chris Franck, ex membro del gruppo di percussioni brasiliano Batu di Brighton, il gruppo ha pubblicato una manciata di singoli per etichette indipendenti prima di firmare con la Jive Records nell'autunno del 1995. Il loro LP di debutto Flying Away è uscito due anni dopo, ed è stato caratterizzato dal singolo "Underwater Love", che è diventato un successo europeo grazie al suo utilizzo in una campagna pubblicitaria per i jeans Levi's.
