1938. Henri Young doet een ontsnappingspoging uit gevangeniseiland Alcatraz, maar wordt gepakt en moet drie jaar in een isoleercel doorbrengen onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden. De tweede ontsnapte gevangene die ook werd opgepakt wist echter een regeling te treffen en werd menselijk behandeld. De dag dat hij eindelijk uit de isoleercel mag, pakt hij in de eetzaal een lepel en vermoordt de ander. De advocaat die hij aangewezen krijgt is groentje James Stamphill, die niet wil dat Henri naar de gaskamer gaat. In plaats daarvan klaagt hij Alcatraz aan, omdat ze een eenvoudige dief tot moordenaar maakte.
