The band was formed in 1966 in Tokyo by a group of high school students - Mikiharu Suzuki (drums), Taro Miyuki (guitar), Masaru Hoshi (guitar), Kaoru Murakami (bass). They began as an instrumental rock band similar to The Ventures, but soon after their formation, Hiromitsu (Mikiharu Suzuki's brother) took over vocals. The band began playing rock psychedelia at the suggestion of their manager, who brought back records by American hippies Jefferson Airplane from a trip to San Francisco. The band signed a contract with JVC Records (the Japanese wing of Victor Records), and released a single in November 1967 called "Asamade Matenai", which reached number 38 on the Japanese charts. In April 1968, the first full-length album, Psychedelic Sounds in Japan, was released; The album includes covers of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love", The Doors' "Light My Fire" and two songs by The Animals. They received positive press for being "the first psychedelic band" in Japan and for performing a light show. Bassist Kaoru Murakami left the band in 1969 and guitarist Miyuki switched to bass. The band then signed with Liberty/Toshiba/EMI, moving towards a blues-rock sound. The band disbanded in May 1974. After The Mops, Hoshi remained in the music industry, working as an arranger.
