W.A.S.P. sono un gruppo heavy metal statunitense, formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1982.

L'acronimo "W.A.S.P.", che in lingua inglese viene generalmente inteso come "White Anglo-Saxon Protestant" ("protestante bianco anglosassone&quot, fu invece reinterpretato dai membri del gruppo perchÃ© significasse "We Are Sexual Perverts" ("siamo maniaci sessuali&quot.[7] I W.A.S.P. sono infatti celebri per i loro spettacoli molto caratteristici, che spesso presentano numeri scabrosi o cruenti, sullo stesso stile di quelli inscenati da Alice Cooper, il pioniere di questo tipo di spettacoli. Oltre ai W.A.S.P. in quegli anni trovano successo anche gruppi come i Lizzy Borden o i Motley Crue del primo periodo.

Pur essendo classificati nel genere glam, il loro sound Ã¨ caratterizzato da uno stile piÃ¹ veloce e aggressivo. Fin dagli esordi, lo spirito della band sembra voler coniugare la potenza della scuola heavy metal britannica con le linee melodiche tipiche del rock and roll di stampo americano.

I W.A.S.P. nacquero nel 1982 a Los Angeles, California, da una idea del pluristrumentista Blackie Lawless e del chitarrista Randy Piper. I due avevano giÃ lavorato insieme in due precedenti incarnazioni della band, prima i "Sister" e poi i "Circus Circus". I Sister erano nati nel '76 e nella loro formazione aveva militato anche Nikki Sixx, il leggendario bassista dei MÃ¶tley CrÃ¼e. I Circus Circus, invece, avevano rimpiazzato i Sister negli anni dal '79 all' '81, periodo durante il quale Blackie Lawless era anche impegnato coi London, un'altra heavy metal band che aveva contribuito a fondare giÃ nel 1978.

La prima line-up dei W.A.S.P. vedeva Blackie Lawless nel ruolo di cantante e chitarrista ritmico, Randy Piper come secondo chitarrista, Tony Richards batterista ed il bassista Rik Fox (si dice che il nome della band fu inventato proprio da quest'ultimo), che in precedenza era stato brevemente membro dei Sister assieme a Lawless. Tuttavia Fox venne respinto dal gruppo dopo poco tempo e, una volta andatosene, raggiunse gli Steeler di Ron Keel, band nella quale militava anche Yngwie Malmsteen. Fox fu sostituito nei W.A.S.P. da Don Costa, il quale proveniva, assieme a Tony Richards, dai Dante Fox, ovvero la prima incarnazione di quelli che sarebbero divenuti noti come Great White. Con tale formazione, i W.A.S.P. registrarono quattro demo, tra il 1982 e il 1983. Nell'ordine, i dischi che presentarono per la prima volta la loro musica al grande pubblico vennero intitolati Demo 1982, Face the Attack (l'unico a poter essere considerato un vero e proprio album autoprodotto), 1983 Demo e Second 1983 Demo. Il primo di questi fu prodotto da Ace Frehley nell'autunno del 1982 poco prima di lasciare i Kiss.

Nel 1984 il famigerato Chris Holmes entrÃ² a far parte del gruppo come secondo chitarrista in seguito al licenziamento di Costa, che venne sostituito interamente da Lawless, ora nel ruolo di bassista. Con la formazione rinnovata, e potendo vantare ben due chitarristi di alta qualitÃ tecnica, i W.A.S.P. iniziarono ad esibirsi nei loro primi show, giÃ caratterizzati da parti irriverenti ed incendiarie, facendo segnalare regolarmente il tutto esaurito ad ogni spettacolo e venendo acclamati persino in uno dei locali piÃ¹ noti al circuito rock di quegli anni, il Troubadour. Durante uno di questi concerti, grazie anche ad un ottimo demo prodotto lo stesso anno, The First Album Rehearsal Demos, i W.A.S.P. furono notati dall'allora manager degli Iron Maiden Rod Smallwood, il quale offrÃ¬ alla band un cospicuo contratto con l'etichetta discografica Capitol Records, subito accettato dai membri del gruppo.

W.A.S.P. is an American heavy metal band formed in 1982 and emerged with the L.A. scene that featured Motley Crue, Ratt and Quiet Riot. The band's popularity peaked in the 1980s and yet it continues to record and tour, making it one of the most enduring of the West Coast heavy metal bands. W.A.S.P. gained notoriety for its shock rock themed image, lyrics and live performances.

The band in the mid-1980s was a prominent target of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) led by Tipper Gore, wife of then-Sen. Al Gore (D-Tenn.), an organization that pushed for labels on recorded music. The band immortalized its fight with the PMRC on the song, "Harder, Faster," on its infamous 1987 live album, "Live: In the Raw."

The band writes and performs today, though Blackie Lawless remains the only member from the original line-up. They released a new album in April, 2007 entitled Dominator.

In October 2007, W.A.S.P. embarked on their biggest tour yet, The Crimson Idol Tour, to celebrate the album's 15th anniversary. It is the first time that the album, often regarded to be among the band's finest work, will be played in full from start to finish. The tour kicked off in Greece, in Thessaloniki at the Principal Club Theater on October 26, 2007. It has also been announced that this tour will be W.A.S.P.'s last tour for a while to come.
