Any band’s first recording session is a nervous time. If playing live is the proving ground for any song, then the studio is a laboratory where they get dissected. The first time through it’s a very uncomfortable experience.

There is nowhere to hide, everything is laid bare. When U2 went into the studio for the first time with Horslips front man Barry Devlin, in the fall of 1978, we were in good hands. Barry had a lot of experience and managed to steer some very green young men through the process. This demo was probably far too true a reflection of the band than we were comfortable with. We ended up going back into a demo studio four months later with the next batch of songs, many of which ended up on the BOY album, and recording a demo more like our live shows; messy, passionate, brash, and inspirational. It didn’t get us a deal either, but Bono brought it around to every UK music paper and the interest this coverage created brought us to the attention of Island Records. You know most of the rest of the story, but here is where it all started.
