Synopis:

At her father's funeral, Ann Chapin thinks back over the last five years of his life, years of apparent political and personal failure dominated by a selfish and dissatisfied wife and eased only by alcohol. But it starts to emerge that there was in fact one brief and unsuspected period of happiness and love.

Durante o funeral de joe chapim (GARY COOPER) um homem respeitado por todos e pai de Ann (DIANE VARSI) ela começa a relembrar os acontecimentos recentes vividos por ele. Tempo de fracassas na vida pessoal e política e ainda dominado por Edith (GERALDINE FITZGERALD) uma esposa egoista, insatisfeita e mergulhada no alcool. Porém, conforme as lembranças vão surgindo e em meio a muita amargura e tristeza, também aparecem fatos que mosram um pequeno período de felicidade e amor
