As you may have seen in the news recently, six Dr Seuss classics have not only been discontinued by the publisher, but further, retailers including Barnes & Noble and eBay are removing all listings for existing copies of these books.

While it is the right of a publisher to stop publishing their own works, the pressure put on retailers to remove all listings effectively pushes this through the blurry lines of censorship. If we cannot draw the line at banning the sale of books, how is this any better than book burning?

eBay is removing all listings for those who may wish to purchase these books legitimately because they're supposedly racist. And yet they will happily sell you a copy of Mein Kampf.

I believe history should not be forgotten and works of fiction should be considered as products of their time. There are many many books, movies, TV shows, and other media that could easily be considered offensive today. Should they be forced down people's throats? Absolutely not. But nor should they be banned.

After all, if these books truly are offensive, we should remember the old aphorism: "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Here is the full collection of all six banned Dr Seuss books. I will let you decide for yourself how offensive you believe them to be. I release them in the spirit of the moral values outlined above and the belief in freedom of information. You can ban stores from selling paper books but you cannot stop a peer-to-peer network.
