Mientras reparan un satélite fuera de su nave, dos astronautas sufren un grave accidente y quedan flotando en el espacio. Son la doctora Ryan Stone, una brillante ingeniera que realiza su primera misión espacial, y el veterano astronauta Matt Kowalsky.
