Promoted as "edgy" and "challenging" by NBC, "The Book of Daniel" premiered as a midseason replacement on Friday nights at 10/9c in January 2006. The series followed Reverend Daniel Webster, an Episcopal priest with a painkiller addiction, who regularly sees and talks to Jesus, depicted with a traditional Western image. Only Daniel can see Jesus, who reminds him of church teachings and helps him deal with his dysfunctional and problematic family.

Controversial content in the series, including drug use and sexual content against a Christian backdrop, was met with protest by religious groups and viewers, and The New York Times reported following the series' cancellation that NBC had trouble selling ad time on the show even after offering discounts. Eight NBC affiliates refused to air the show at all during its brief run, and on January 24, 2006, an NBC spokeswoman announced the show had been dropped from the schedule after just three weeks
