Swedish detective Martin Beck receives a call from Hans Sperling, a German colleague who seeks his help in solving the perplexing murder of an art collector. Sperling is in Stockholm for an art auction, and intended to pick up an erotic Japanese painting, but was outbid by the victim, who was later found dead in Sperling's hotel. While things certainly don't look good for Beck's panic-stricken acquaintance, the Swede gumshoe agrees to take up his case, and together the pair delve into the dark world of art fraud.
