Maria Bethânia Viana Telles Velloso (Santo Amaro, June 18, 1946) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter.
In her youth, Maria Bethânia participated in plays with her brother, the singer and songwriter Caetano Veloso, and other prominent singers of the time. In 1965, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she began her musical career replacing singer Nara Leão in the show Opinion. In the same year, he signed a record deal with RCA and released his eponymous debut album.
With over 26 million records sold over a 50-year career, Bethânia was elected in 2012 by Rolling Stone Brasil magazine as the fifth biggest voice of Brazilian music.
