“Black Pearls”was recorded at the height of Trane's "Sheets of Sound" period, a straight-ahead hard-bop jam session. It would be Coltrane's last session with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor. A truly underrated album. Masterful.
At the time, Coltrane was a member of Miles Davis’ band, and “Black Pearl” was one of his solo ventures. It was only three days later that he participated as a member of the Miles Davis Sextet that recorded "Stella By Starlight", “Fran Dance”, “Love For Sale” and "On Green Dolphin Street”, later released on “1958 Miles”.
