The Orphans caused a minor stir in 1977 when it became the first Russian film in nearly two decades to be chosen for the Cannes Film Festival by the festival judges, rather than being submitted by the Soviets. The film did not see the light of a carbon arc in America until 1980.

Films are predominantly made for entertainment. However some, such as the Russian movie The Orphans - thanks to its intelligently composed narrative - lead its viewers to powerful conclusions about life. The main protagonist is a writer who is trying hard to make sense of the childhood experiences that crafted his personality. He remembers the times when he was a little boy, when he and his sister had to steal food in order to survive. World War II had just ended, leaving them as orphans.
